The Elephant Walk

500 Castro St.

San Francisco, CA 94114

About the Elephant Walk:

At the literal beating heart of San Francisco's Castro district sat the Elephant Walk, a watering hole that saw so much of the history of gay liberation in San Francisco from 1975 to 1995. Not only a popular spot for gay icons like Sylvester and Harvey Milk, it also was the site of the police raid and retribution during the White Night Riots. The SFPD, out for blood, stormed the Elephant walk that night for retribution, "smashing windows, doors, tables, chairs, bottles, and peoples’ heads." This pivotal location in gay history would later become Harvey's until 2022.
